The Vela Uniform component focused specifically on seismic detection methods for underground tests.
The central scientific problem was distinguishing the seismic signature of an underground nuclear explosion from that of a natural earthquake, a distinction that was not reliably possible using the seismological methods and station coverage available at the program's outset.
The program funded a substantially expanded global network of seismographic stations and advanced methods of seismic data analysis, contributions that became foundational to the development of modern seismology as practiced for civilian earthquake monitoring purposes.
