The CIA document that describes the universe as a hologram

McDonnell of Army Intelligence and Security Command in June 1983, filed in the CIA's STARGATE collection and declassified in 2003. This page exists because one specific passage inside that report, the holographic universe argument, circulates constantly online detached from its source, usually without anyone actually reading the document it came from.

McDonnell's report builds its case on the work of two real, credentialed scientists. Karl Pribram was a Stanford University neuroscientist whose theory of holographic brain function, developed across decades of actual peer-reviewed research, proposed that memory and perception are distributed throughout the brain the way information is distributed across a holographic plate, rather than stored in single discrete locations. David Bohm was a theoretical physicist, a onetime collaborator of Einstein, whose interpretation of quantum mechanics proposed that the universe has an underlying, undivided wholeness that conventional physics treats as separate particles and fields only because of how it is being observed.

The report combines these two real scientific positions into a single claim: that the human mind functions as a hologram interpreting a holographic universe, and that altered states of consciousness, the entire subject of the Gateway Process, work by changing which parts of that underlying hologram the mind is tuned to perceive.

Of everything in the 29-page Gateway Process report, this passage is what circulates. It offers a complete, self-contained claim (reality is a hologram) attributed to a real government intelligence document, built on two real scientists' real work, without requiring the reader to understand brainwave entrainment, Hemi-Sync audio technology, or any of the report's actual stated purpose, training USAINSCOM personnel to achieve altered states for intelligence applications. The passage is frequently quoted on its own, stripped of the fact that it sits inside a training document about intelligence tradecraft, not a physics paper.

This establishes that a declassified US Army intelligence document, filed in the CIA's own STARGATE archive, contains a formal argument that reality functions as a hologram, built on citations to real published scientific work by a real Stanford neuroscientist and a real theoretical physicist. The document is genuine, the citations are to real people and real ideas, and the passage says what it is quoted as saying.

What this does not establish is that Pribram or Bohm endorsed McDonnell's specific application of their work to intelligence tradecraft, that the CIA as an institution adopted the holographic universe model as an official position, or that the underlying physics claim has been experimentally validated. Pribram's holographic brain theory and Bohm's implicate order remain minority, contested positions within neuroscience and physics respectively, genuinely proposed by genuine scientists, not settled consensus.
