Scientists recreated deja vu in a lab, and found something stranger than the feeling itself
Deja vu went largely unstudied by science for most of the twentieth century, treated as too fleeting and unpredictable to reproduce in a lab. Colorado State University psychologist Anne Cleary changed that, using virtual reality to reliably induce the sensation in human subjects by building scenes that spatially mirrored earlier, unrecalled scenes. Her real, peer-reviewed findings, published in Consciousness and Cognition and Psychological Science, confirm deja vu is a genuine memory phenomenon. The stranger part, confirmed in the same research: while experiencing it, people report feeling they can predict what happens next in the scene. They cannot. But the feeling of foresight is itself real, measurable, and now understood.

Wearing a headset, subjects were guided through a new scene sharing the hidden spatial configuration of a past one. Participants reliably reported deja vu specifically during scenes that spatially mapped onto earlier ones, confirming what researchers call the spatial familiarity hypothesis, a specific, testable explanation for a sensation long assumed to be untestable.
In later experiments using dynamic virtual tours, moving subjects through a scene with a series of turns, Cleary's team found something specific and real: during deja vu, people frequently reported feeling they could predict which direction the tour would turn next. When tested directly, they were no better than chance at actually predicting it. The feeling of foresight was genuine and strongly felt. The predictive ability behind it was not. Cleary's own summary of the finding is direct: deja vu's prescient quality is just a feeling, but it sure feels real.
This establishes that deja vu is a real, reproducible memory phenomenon with a specific, testable mechanism, unrecognized spatial familiarity between a current scene and an earlier, unrecalled one, confirmed through controlled virtual reality experiments and published in peer-reviewed journals. It further establishes that the sense of being able to predict what happens next during deja vu is a real, measurable experience that does not correspond to any actual predictive ability.
What this does not establish is that every reported instance of deja vu shares this exact mechanism, or that the feeling itself is meaningless. Cleary's own research treats the sensation as a genuine, information-rich signal about memory retrieval, worth taking seriously as a phenomenon, even once its predictive quality is shown to be an illusion.
