The real Air Force file on America’s first “missing time” case

Betty Hill contacted Pease Air Force Base the day after the sighting. Major Paul W. Henderson, an Air Force intelligence officer, investigated and filed a real Project Blue Book Air Intelligence Information Report through the 100th Bomb Wing, Strategic Air Command, at Pease. This is a genuine government intake document, not a secondhand retelling, describing the Hills’ sighting of a brightly lit, cigar-shaped craft. It predates the Hills going public by four years; their account was not widely reported until a Boston Traveler series in 1965.

The original 1961 Blue Book report documents a sighting and a period of unaccounted time. It does not contain an abduction narrative. That fuller account, including humanoid figures, an examination aboard a craft, and the widely reproduced star map, emerged between January and June 1964, nearly three years later, through hypnosis sessions conducted by Boston psychiatrist Dr. Benjamin Simon, after Barney Hill was referred for treatment of ulcers, high blood pressure, and anxiety.

Astronomer and Blue Book consultant J. Allen Hynek noted that under repeated hypnosis, Betty and Barney’s accounts agreed in considerable detail, despite neither having heard what the other said under hypnosis until much later, a genuinely striking feature of the case regardless of how one interprets the underlying phenomenon.

This establishes that a real US Air Force intelligence officer filed a real, contemporaneous government report on a UFO sighting the day after it occurred, that both witnesses independently reported approximately two hours of unaccounted time immediately following the event, and that the case predates and is entirely separate from decades of later cultural elaboration.

What this does not establish is that the abduction narrative reflects literal events. That narrative derives from hypnotic regression conducted years after the original report, a technique with well-documented reliability concerns, discussed on this site’s own coverage of false memory research. The original Blue Book file and the later hypnosis-derived account are two different categories of evidence, and treating them as a single unbroken record obscures exactly the kind of gap worth examining critically.
