As the F-4 closed to attack range, it lost all instrumentation and communications. The pilot broke off the intercept and turned away from the object, at which point the aircraft regained all instrumentation. A second F-4 was scrambled. As this aircraft attempted to lock weapons on the object, the weapons control panel malfunctioned and the aircraft's communications were jammed.
